BasicKnowledge BasicKnowledge Issue No. 312 · The Weekly Foundation

The 20% that carries the rest

BasicKnowledge was founded on an observation from teaching: every field is built on a foundation of concepts that make up perhaps a fifth of the material but carry almost all of the understanding. Miss them, and every book in the field stays out of reach; master them, and the rest becomes climbable. Most learning resources skip or rush this layer — either too academic to enter or too thin to hold weight. We built a publisher dedicated to it.

What we publish

Long-form explainers across dozens of subject domains — finance, technology, health, law, and the humanities — each written to the same internal standard:

  • Fact-checked depth: every explainer is reviewed against primary sources, with sources listed so readers can go further or check us.
  • The clarity standard: plain language, terms defined at first use, and examples built from things a reader already understands.
  • Structure that survives skimming and rereading: clear sections, honest signposting of what we simplified, and no bait headlines.
  • Accessible formats: every article available in a plain-text version, because learning does not need a magazine layout.

Who it is for

The adult learner entering a new field, the professional filling gaps outside their lane, the student who wants the version written by someone who remembers being confused. We are not a news site chasing trends; most of our explainers will be as true in five years as today, and we update them when they are not.

Master the basics, master the field. BasicKnowledge exists to make the foundation of every subject learnable — clearly, honestly, and in one trustworthy place.
